Sleep Disorders in Older Adults

Synopsis:

This video tape includes a discussion of: types of sleep disordered breathing, their symptoms, causes, prevalence and treatment; age related changes in sleeping, consequences of disordered sleep, its impact in cognition and a plan of care for sufferers of sleep disorders; and moving disorders experienced while sleeping (restless leg syndrome, periodic limb movement disorder and rapid eye movement disorder) as well as their diagnoses and treatment approaches.

Objectives:

After viewing this videotape, you should be able to:

  • Identify symptoms of sleep apnea in the elderly.
  • Recognize the magnitude of the prevalence of sleep apnea in the elderly.
  • Describe more definitive diagnostic methods and treatment options for sleep apnea.
  • List recent research findings related to sleep and cognition.
  • Identify the impact of impaired sleep on cognitive vitality.
  • Identify signs and symptoms of common movement disorders during sleep in the elderly.
  • Become familiar with the evidence-based treatment guidelines for treatment of restless legs syndrome.

Cathy Cole, DNSc, ARNP, BC is currently a Fellow at the Health Services Research and Development Service, North Little Rock Campus, Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS) and has a John Hartford Foundation Award at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in Little Rock.

David G. Davila, MD is the Medical Director of the Sleep Clinic and Center at Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock, AR. He is an Adjunct Professor in the College of Nursing at UAMS.

Kathy Richards, PhD, RN, FAASM is a Diplomate, American Board of Sleep Medicine; Professor in the College of Nursing at UAMS; and Research Health Scientist at CAVHS in Little Rock, Arkansas.
