Synopsis:
This video tape includes a definition of mature sexuality and a discussion of: mature sexuality issues and myths; roles of health professionals; effective patient interview techniques; research studies data; causes of sexual dysfunction; treatment options for women and men; pharmacology and medication impact on mature sexuality; ethical issues of sexuality and patients with dementia.
Objectives:
After completing this video tape, you should be able to:
- Describe changing patterns of sexual behavior as individuals age;
- Identify normal changes in sexual response, common age-related dysfunction, and available treatments for sexual dysfunction in older adults;
- Explain different mechanisms of sexual dysfunction in older people, including physiology, pathophysiology and medications; and
- Discuss the issues involved in sexual issues, including sexually transmitted diseases and inappropriate sexual behavior.
Faculty:
Jane Carney, MSW is a Professor of Gerontology and Sociology, Oklahoma City Community College and Adjunct Professor, Donald W. Reynolds Department of Geriatric Medicine, Oklahoma University Health Science Center (OUHSC), Oklahoma City, OK. She is past Chair of the Oklahoma Alliance of Aging and the Oklahoma Business and Aging Leadership Coalition, as well as past committee chair for the Association of Gerontology in Higher Education. Ms. Carney is active in national, state, and local organizations; she is the author of numerous publications and has been a consultant and trainer for businesses and agencies.
Lee Lee Doyle, PhD is a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Associate Dean of Continuing Medical Education, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), Little Rock, AR. Dr. Doyle is a member of the Board of Directors and Chairperson of the Education Committee at the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals.
Alex E. Finkbeiner, MD is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Urology, UAMS and a Staff Physician at Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS), Little Rock, AR.
Sandy Sanders, LCSW, MA Gerontology is a clinical geriatric social worker at the Senior Health Center, the Donald W. Reynolds Department of Geriatrics at UAMS, Little Rock, AR.
Bryan D. Struck, MD is an Assistant Professor Donald W. Reynolds Department of Geriatrics Medicine, OUHSC, Oklahoma City, OK. Dr. Struck graduated from the University of Texas Medical School in Houston, Texas where he completed his internal medicine residency. He did a 2-year geriatric medicine fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine. He is board certified in internal medicine and board eligible in geriatric medicine. Dr. Struck provides primary care and consultative services aimed at enabling seniors to experience healthy aging. Part of healthy aging is an awareness of how sexuality is impacted by changes that occur as we age.
Mark A. Stratton, PharmD, BCPS, FASHP is a new faculty member at the College of Pharmacy, OUHSC, Oklahoma City, OK, where he is in charge of enhancing geriatric education, research and service. Dr. Stratton completed his PharmD degree and residency training at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and has held faculty positions at the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University, The University of New Mexico, and the University of Houston. Dr. Stratton has spent 18 years working in geriatrics. His special interest lies in the appropriate use of drug products in older adults. Numerous medications prescribed to older adults can adversely impact sexual function in older people.
