Hearing Loss in the Elderly

Synopsis:

This video tape includes an overview of hearing and hearing loss; primary causes of hearing loss in aging; problems and behaviors associated with hearing loss; a discussion of hearing loss statistics; the importance of communications; strategies for communicating with hearing-impaired people; facilitating communication in a healthcare setting; hearing aids; pros, cons, and factors affecting use of assistive devices; legislative mandates; and community resources.

Objectives:

After completing this video tape, you should be able to:

  1. List three factors that limit effective communication;
  2. Identify disease processes and environmental factors that commonly affect the aging ear;
  3. Describe changes in auditory perception associated with hearing loss;
  4. Identify strategies for communicating with hearing-impaired patients
  5. Recognize the parts of a hearing aid and their future; and
  6. Name different types of assistive devices and their applications.

Faculty:

Ann Mahon Hedges, MA is a Clinical and Rehabilitative Audiologist, Central Arkansas Healthcare System (CAVHS), North Little Rock, AR. Ms. Hedges is coordinator of communication accessibility program, the hearing aid and assistive listening device program, the hearing conservation program, and the compensation and pension program.

Larry M. Karpe, MS is a Clinical Audiologist at CAVHS, Little Rock, AR. Mr. Karpe specializes in diagnostic and hearing aid evaluations. He serves as an Adjunct Instructor in the UAMS/UALR Audiology Graduate Program.

Karen Lutrick is the Manager of the Assistive Listening Devices Center, UALR, Little Rock, AR.
