Exercise and Aging

Objectives
At the completion of this 2-hour video teleconference attendees
will be able to:
- Describe body composition changes that occur with advancing age and the influence of these changes on functional status.
- Discuss the causes of loss of fitness and fatigue with aging.
- Distinguish the differences between the effects of aerobic and resistance exercise.
- Link the influence of exercise on energy metabolism and body fat levels.
- Relate the influence of exercise on chronic diseases associated with aging
- Use appropriate safety guideline for increasing physical activity and starting an exercise program

Faculty:
William J. Evans, Ph.D. is the Jane and Ed Warmack Chair of Nutritional Longevity and director of the Nutrition, Metabolism, and Exercise Laboratory in the Donald Reynolds Institute on Aging at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and a research scientist in the Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center in the VA Medical Center. He is the author or co-author of more than 200 publications in scientific journals. Much of his research has examined the functional and metabolic consequences of physical activity in elderly people. Along with Irwin Rosenberg, M.D., he is the author of Biomarkers: The Ten Determinants of Aging You Can Control (Simon & Schuster) and has recently authored AstroFit (Simon & Schuster, 2002). His laboratory examines the relationship between exercise, nutrition and aging. His studies have demonstrated the ability of older men and women to improve strength, fitness, and health through exercise, even into the 10th decade of life.
