Exercise and Aging

Synopsis:

This video tape includes a discussion of: the physiology of aging and the effect of exercise on the aging process and aerobic capacity; sarcopenia and its causes; research on  fitness improvement with appropriate exercise intensity; process and effects of strength and endurance training in the elderly; contraindications and concerns of the elderly when beginning an exercise program; and strength training program design and evaluation.

Objectives:

After completing this video tape, you should be able to:

  1. Identify the major components of daily energy expenditure and appropriate weight loss strategies for overweight elderly people;
  2. Describe the causes of sarcopenia (age-associated loss of muscle) and its consequences;
  3. Discuss the potential outcomes of progressive resistance strength training in elderly individuals; and
  4. Initiate a home-based exercise program for elderly individuals.

Wayne Campbell, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Food and Nutrition at Purdue University.
