End of Life Issues

This free video teleconference, jointly sponsored by the AGEC, the GRECC at CAVHS and the Reynolds Institute on Aging at UAMS, requires no participant pre-registration. Attendees to this VTC will receive 2 hours of CE credits.

Objectives
At the completion of this 2-hour video teleconference attendees will be able to:

  1. Define palliative care and hospice care.
  2. Discuss the role of palliative care and hospice in primary care.
  3. Summarize the three major purposes of Advance Directives.
  4. Recognize the need for collaboration among health care provider in promoting completion and implementation of living wills.

Faculty:

A. Reed Thompson, MD, is an Associate Professor in the DWR Department of Geriatrics, College of Medicine, at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) and the Director of the Palliative Care Service at CAVHS and UAMS.  Dr. Thompson completed the Stanford Faculty Development Program in End-of-Life Care at Stanford University, CA in 2000 and has been instrumental in the development and growth of end of life care services in Little Rock.  He has been the Medical Director of Arkansas Hospice, an outpatient and 40-bed inpatient facility, since 1999.

Diane Y. Morgan, APN is the coordinator of the Palliative Care Program at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS) in Little Rock since May 2000.  She is board certified as a Clinical Specialist in Gerontological Nursing as well as Advanced Practice Palliative Care Management. She is a trainer in the End of Life Nurse Education consortium (ELNEC) and an approved educator in the Hospice and Palliative Nurse Association.
