Drug Use and Misuse

Synopsis:

This video tape includes the discussion of: herbal supplements (gingko biloba, ginseng, licorice root, yohimbe bark, kava kava, ephedra/ Ma Huang; St. John’s wort; garlic; milk thistle) and glucosamine/chondroitin; herb/drug and food/drug interactions; basic drug principles; pharmacokinetics; biotransformation and dietary factors of biotransformation;  Biogenic Amines; grapefruit and drugs; High Risk Statins; nutritional deficiencies caused by drugs; Tyramine restricted diet; OTC drug use and adverse effects of misuse ( heart failure, hypertension, cognitive disorders, insomnia, constipation, ulcers and reflux, blood clotting disorders, benign prosthetic hyperplasia, renal insufficiency); antacids; histamine-2 receptor blockers; non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents; antihistamines; what to do before adding a new medication.

Objectives:

After completing this video tape, you should be able to:

  1. Summarize principles of pharmacotherapy in older patients;
  2. Discuss effects of common herbal products;
  3. List commonly used OTCs and their effect in the elderly population; and
  4. Develop strategies to avoid adverse drug events in the elderly.

Faculty:

Bill J Gurley, PhD is an Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, College of Pharmacy, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), Little Rock, AR. Dr. Gurley has been the Director of the Clinical Pharmacokinetics Research Laboratory in the College of Pharmacy at UAMS. In 2000, he received the UAMS Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences Most Outstanding Faculty Award.

Lisa C. Hutchison, PharmD, BCPS is an Associate Professor at the UAMS College of Pharmacy and Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging, Little Rock, AR. Dr. Hutchison has recently won the ASHP Foundation Award for Outstanding Achievement in Health system Pharmacy.

Beverly J. McCabe-Sellers, PHD, RD is a Professor of Dietetics and Nutrition, College of Health Related Professions, UAMS. She is the past Chair of Dietetics and Nutrition. During her tenure as Chair, Dr. McCabe-Sellers developed, planned and implemented a new Master of Science in Clinical Nutrition program, which had an emphasis in Geriatric Nutrition, Pediatric Nutrition, and Health Promotion and Wellness for advanced level practice preparation. Among her many accomplishments is the development of the program for “Telehealth,” which provides medical nutrition therapy consultation to rural Arkansans for diabetes, weight control, hypertension, gastrointestinal disorders, and other chronic conditions.

Robert F. Richardson, MS, PharmD, CGP, FASCP is an Associate Professor, College of Pharmacy,  UAMS. He is the Program Director of the Geriatric Specialty Residency and a Clinical Pharmacist in Geriatrics at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS) Little Rock. Dr. Richardson is Preceptor of Pharmacy Residents on Geriatric Rotation, and instructor of senior pharmacy students on rotation and Co-coordinator of Geriatric Therapeutics Elective Course.
