Diabetes Management in Older Adults

Synopsis:

This video tape includes the discussion of: diabetes’ demographics; pathogenesis of Type 2 diabetes; diagnosis of and screening for diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance;  treatment plans; physical exams; Charcot’s foot; prevalence of obesity; retinopathy; diabetes associated atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease ; intervention with nutritional therapy and exercise; treatment goals with sulfonylureas, Metformin, glucosidase inhibitors, thiazolidines and/or meglitinides.

Objectives:

After completing this video tape, you should be able to:

  1. Describe diagnosis criteria, pathophysiology, and demographics of diabetes;
  2. Assess complications of diabetes;
  3. Discuss dietary goals for a person with diabetes; and
  4. Recognize important drugs used and contraindications in treating diabetes in older adults.

Faculty:

Donald Lee Bodenner, MD is an Assistant Professor of Geriatrics in the Donald W. Reynolds Department of Geriatrics, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) and a staff physician at the Geriatric Research and Education Clinical Center at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS), Little Rock, AR. Dr. Bodenner is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology. He holds memberships in the Endocrine Society, American Federation of Clinical Research, American College of Physicians and American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.

Joanne Kiehn, RD is a member of the collaborative practice team for the Donald W. Reynolds Senior Health Center, UAMS,  Little Rock, AR. She is involved in individual nutrition counseling and education as well as Medical Nutrition Therapy in the areas of diabetes, weight management issues, cardiovascular disease, dementia, and geriatric wellness. Ms. Kiehn is a member of the American Dietetic Association, Arkansas Dietetic Association and the Gerontological Nutritionists and Diabetes Care and Education practice groups.

Mary Sha Moriaty, BSN, APN is the Diabetes Firm Clinical Coordinator at CAVHS, Little Rock, AR.
