Synopsis:
This video tape includes a discussion of; behavioral symptoms of dementia; pharmacological and non-pharmacological management; common non-ADL deficient in nursing homes; assistance with ADL’s; therapies; caregiver issues and reducing caregiver stress; dementia management; environmental and social factors.
Objectives:
After completing this video tape, you should be able to:
- Identify the most commonly used pharmacologic therapies for the management and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias;
- Describe interventions for decreasing functional decline in nursing home residents with dementia;
- Recognize who are primary caregivers; and
- Recommend support sources or individual strategies to alleviate caregiver stress.

Mark Pippenger, MD is an Assistant Professor, Departments of Neurology, Geriatrics, and Psychiatry, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), Little Rock, AR. Dr. Pippenger completed his MD degree and a residence in Neurology at UAMS. He did a Fellowship in Behavior Neurology and Dementia at UCLA. Dr. Pippenger’s current research interests are in developing brief screening tests for dementia, cognitive evaluation of patients with ALS, and diagnostic coding in dementia.
Kathy Richards, PhD, RN is an Associate Professor at UAMS College of Nursing. She is also Associate Chief Nurse of Research at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System, Little Rock, AR.
Sandy Sanders, LCSW, MA is a clinical geriatric social worker at the Senior Health Center in the Donald W. Reynolds Department of Geriatrics at UAMS, Little Rock, AR.
