Dementia Diagnosis

Synopsis:

This video tape includes a discussion of dementia, its causes and types (Lewy bodies, frontotemporal); criteria for its diagnosis; screening for it; Alzheimer’s disease (AD); AD and age; early-onset vs. late-onset; warning signs; purpose of knowing the patient’s history; neurological, mental status and medical exams; symptoms; dementia laboratory tests and brain imaging; dementia management; and helpful websites and phone numbers for more dementia information.

Objectives:

After completing this video tape, you should be able to:

  1. Describe the role of neuropsychological evaluation in the diagnosis of dementia;
  2. Analyze the cognitive, personality, and functional deficits that are typical of dementia;
  3. Differentiate the varied essential components of a medical workup for dementia, and the rationale for each.

Faculty:

Victor Henderson, MD, MS is the Associate Chief of Staff for Geriatrics and Extended Care at Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS). He is also the Professor and Vice-Chair of the Department of Geriatrics, Professor of Neurology, Pharmacology, and Epidemiology at the College of Medicine, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), Little Rock, AR. Dr. Henderson received his MD degree from John Hopkins University and he received his Masters in Science from the University of Washington.

Roger D. Williams, PhD is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the DW Reynolds Department of Geriatrics at UAMS. He is also the Director of Neuropsychological Services for the Department of Geriatrics, Senior Health Clinic. Dr. Williams received his PhD degree in Counseling Psychology from Indiana State University, Terre Haute, IN and his MA degree from the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN. He currently serves on the training committee of the APA approved predoctoral internship in clinical psychology at CAVHS, Little Rock, AR.
