Caregiver Issues

Synopsis:

This video tape includes a discussion of: the stresses and chronic strain of care giving ; coping strategies and social supports; Long Term Care statistics; caregiver’s role in case of dementia; caregiver assistance options; Cultivating partnerships; the dilemmas of dependency and “difficult” dependency behaviors; differences and finesse in care giving; a physician’s view of care giving and caregiver interactions; care giving as a risk factor for morbidity; a caregiver’s perspective; care across the continuum; local and national information on available services and funding sources (Area Agency on Aging, Alzheimer’s Association Diagnostic Center); useful Internet web sites; recommended books and videos.

Objectives:

After completing this video tape, you should be able to:

  1. Define at least 3 areas of concern to caregivers of older adults who require long-term care;
  2. Discuss strategies to reduce stress associated with identified caregiver issues; and
  3. Identify resources that may provide support for successful care giving of older, dependent persons.

Alma Belzer, PhD is a services planner of the Oklahoma City Area Agency on Aging.

Jaqueline B. Cook, LSW, LMFT is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Practice at the University of Oklahoma Science Health Center (OUSHC), Oklahoma City, OK.

Rita Jones, MSW, LCSW works at the Home Based Primary Care Unit at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS), Little Rock, AR. Ms. Jones is a past member of the Arkansas Social Work Licensing Board and a member of the National Association of Social Workers. Ms. Jones has years of experience in geriatric rehabilitation adult day care, and also in in-patient psychiatric care.

Judy Karklins, LCSW is a social worker and Director of the Home Based Primary Care Program at CAVHS, Little Rock, AR.

Robert Salinas, MD is an Assistant Professor in the DWR Department of Geriatrics, OUSHC, Oklahoma City, OK.

Sandy Sanders, LCSW, MA Gerontology is a clinical social worker at the Senior Health center, in the DWR Department of Geriatrics at UAMS.
