Cardiovascular Disease in Older Adults

Synopsis:

This video tape includes a discussion of risk factors, diagnosis and symptoms of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) as well as Coronary Heart Failure (CHF); causes of myocardial ischemia; the use of stress tests; catheterization and angiography; therapy for CAD; recommended life-style changes; recommendations for anti-oxidants, fish and fish oils, aspirin; beta blockers, calcium blockers, cholesterol lowering agents’ statin safety; coronary artery bypass surgery; systolic dysfunction; angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors along with target , initiation and maintenance doses, and contradictions; spironolactone; vasodilators; digoxin; diuretics; any risk factors for myopathy

Objectives:

After completing this video tape, you should be able to:

  1. Explain the impact of age on the cardiovascular system;
  2. Discuss the pathogenesis and evidence-based therapy of coronary heart disease;
  3. Describe the current management of heart failure in older adults; and
  4. Evaluate the effectiveness and safety of statin therapy in older adults.

Faculty:

Amy Franks, PharmD is currently an assistant professor in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), Little Rock, AR and a member of several professional organizations, including the American Heart Association, the American College of Clinical Pharmacists, and the Arkansas Pharmacists Association. Dr. Franks has recently completed a fellowship in cardiovascular pharmacotherapy.

Jacob Joseph, MD is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of the Heart Failure Treatment Program in the Division of Cardiology at the UAMS, Little Rock, AR. Dr. Joseph is involved in multiple clinical trials of drug and device treatment of heart failure and in research into basic mechanisms of heart failure, specifically the role of homocystine. Dr. Joseph is a Staff physician at Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS), Little Rock, AR

Jay Mehta, MD is Professor of Internal Medicine, Physiology & Biophysics, Stebbins Chair in Cardiology and Director, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at UAMS, Little Rock, AR. Dr. Mehta is a Staff physician at CAVHS, Little Rock, AR.

Jeanne Y. Wei, MD, PhD, FACC, FSGC is Professor and Executive Vice Chairman of the Reynolds Department of Geriatrics, at UAMS, Little Rock, AR. Dr. Wei is an experienced investigator, teacher, and academic administrator. She has over twenty-two years of experience in research, in mentoring of fellows and junior faculty, and in developing new research and academic basic and clinical programs and initiatives. Dr. Wei is a Staff physician at the GRECC, CAVHS, Little Rock, AR.
