Bioterrorism Preparedness and the Elderly Video Teleconference

This free video teleconference, jointly sponsored by the AGEC, the GRECC at CAVHS and the Reynolds Institute on Aging at UAMS, requires no participant pre-registration. Attendees to this VTC will receive 2 hours of CE credits.

Objectives

At the completion of this 2-hour video teleconference attendees will be able to:

  1. Summarize the historical context of bioterrorism in general;
  2. Identify the basic classification and organization of bioterror organisms;

  3. Describe emerging diseases which are potential bioterror threats;

  4. State how aging changes make older adults more vulnerable to deleterious effects of bioterrorism;
  5. Describe the difficulty of accessing healthcare and community assistance for the elderly;

  6. The participants will become aware of the types of chemical agents that may be used in a chemical terrorist event - Chemical Warfare Agents and Industrial Agents

  7. Recite the preparedness steps taking place within the healthcare field and recent OSHA guidelines for healthcare facilities that address chemical terrorism.

  8. Name unique antidote treatment modifications designed for the elderly.

  9. Recognize the clinical presentation of patients with 4 emerging diseases: SARS, avian influenza, viral hemorrhagic fevers and variant Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease.

  10. State how these agents could be used as agents of bioterrorism.

Aubrey J. Hough, Jr, MD – is Distinguished Professor of Pathology and Associate Dean for Translational Research and Special Projects, College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in Little Rock, AR.

Rebecca Edge Martin, MD – is Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, UAMS and she is Medical Director, Ebert Diagnostic Unit Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS) in Little Rock, AR.

Margie A. Scott, MD,MT(ASCP) – is Professor of Pathology and Vice-Chair, Department of Pathology, UAMS; and Chief, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service; Hospital Bioterrorism Preparedness Coordinator and Chief, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at CAVHS, Little Rock, Arkansas

Jeanne Wei, MD , PhD, FACC, FSGC – is Professor and Executive Vice Chair of the Reynolds Department of Geriatrics, at UAMS. Dr. Wei is an experienced investigator, teacher, and academic administrator. She has over twenty-two years of experience in research, in mentoring of fellows and junior faculty, and in developing new research and academic basic and clinical programs and initiatives. Dr. Wei is a Staff physician at the GRECC, CAVHS, Little Rock, AR.
