TARGET AUDIENCE:

Physicians in primary care, internal medicine, family medicine and geriatrics, dietitians, pharmacists, nurses and other healthcare professionals interested in nutrition in older adults.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

At the completion of this workshop, attendees should be able to:

  1. identify new perspectives on nutrition and chronic disease;
  2. discuss the various roles of nutrition in aging individuals who have chronic disease;
  3. describe the new research in the interactions among nutrition and various systemic conditions; and
  4. review the effect of some nutrition interventions to improve the management of chronic disease.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will address some of the emerging topics in nutrition and chronic disease.  Major conditions, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, dementia and depression, weight management, and caloric restriction, among others, will be explored. The purpose of this meeting is to examine some new issues and update some of the ongoing controversies that should be updated with research and current thinking.

ACCREDITATION:

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine and Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System. The UAMS College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The UAMS College of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 10.5 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should only claim the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity

Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by Arkansas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Participation in this activity provides 10.5 contact hours of continuing nursing education credit.

Application for CME credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians.  Determination of credit is pending.  Application for CEU’s has also been made for dietitians, pharmacists, nursing home administrators and other disciplines.
