TARGET AUDIENCE:
The target audience includes primary care, internal medicine, family medicine, geriatric specialist physicians, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, mental health professionals and other health professionals interested in mental health issues in older adults including
apathy, depression, and the prevention of suicide.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The goal of this program is to update practitioners with timely information on the advances being made in the recognition, management and treatment of mental illnesses in older adults. At the completion of this program, the attendee should be able to:
- identify a variety of interventions for the management of depression in older adults, including pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments;
- recognize symptoms of depression and substance abuse in elderly patients; and,
- describe interventions to prevent suicide in older adults.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This is a one day conference that will address key issues in mental health etiology and treatment in older adults. Topics will include a discussion of new discoveries in brain function, depression and both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions, the role of
cognition in the development of depression, recognition of depression and substance abuse in older adults, and prevention of suicide in old age.
ACCREDITATION:
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine and Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System. The UAMS College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
The UAMS College of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 5.25 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should only claim the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity
Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by Arkansas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
Participation in this activity provides 5.25 contact hours of continuing nursing education credit.
Application for CME credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Determination of credit is pending. Application for CEU’s has also been made for dietitians, pharmacists, nursing home administrators and other disciplines.
