This course will address the role of the major macronutrients (protein, fat and CHO) in the management of common chronic conditions in elderly persons. The topics will include an in-depth evaluation of the role of dietary protein in health and in various chronic and acute conditions; the management of diabetes in older adults as well as mechanisms for insulin resistance; issues surrounding heart disease and obesity; and the role of fiber in the maintenance of health and disease.
These activities have been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine and the GRECC at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System. The UAMS College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
DESIGNATION OF CREDITS for Nutrition and Aging XXIV: The UAMS College of Medicine Office of Continuing Medical Education designates this educational activity for a maximum of 11 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Each physician should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
This educational activity is provided by the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS). Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by Arkansas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Participation in this activity provides 11.0 contact hours of continuing nursing education credit.
Application for CME credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Determination of credit is pending. Application for CEU’s has also been made for dietitians, pharmacists, nursing home administrators and other disciplines.
