TARGET AUDIENCE:

The target audience includes primary care, internal medicine, family medicine, geriatricians, surgeons, geriatric specialist physicians, nurses, physical/occupational therapists, social workers, pharmacists, nursing home administrators, dietitians and other health professionals interested in issues related to management of frailty in older adults.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

At the completion of this conference the attendee should be able to:

  1. identify at least 4 issues under investigation exploring etiologies of frailty in older adults;
  2. describe the major longitudinal studies investigating frailty in elderly people;
  3. discuss the role of nutrition, weight loss and muscle loss interaction in the development of frailty;
  4. devise nutritional interventions that contribute to the delay of frailty in older adults.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This is a two-day conference that will address the many relationships, and possible etiologies, that occur in the development and management of frailty in older adults. Speakers will address the associated health problems and conditions commonly seen in elderly patients and discuss new areas that are being explored in defining, identifying, understanding and managing frailty.

ACCREDITATION:

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine and the GRECC at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System. The UAMS College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The UAMS College of Medicine Office of Continuing Medical Education designates this educational activity for a maximum of 9.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.  Each physician should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

This educational activity is provided by the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS).  The CAVHS is an approved provider of nursing continuing education by the Arkansas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.  Participation in this activity provides 11.7 contact hours of nursing continuing education credit.

This educational activity is provided by the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS).  The CAVHS is an approved provider of nursing continuing education by the Arkansas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.  Participation in this activity provides 9 contact hours of continuing nursing education credit.
