Objectives: At the completion of this 4 hour conference attendees will be able to:
1. Identify the benefits of physical activity in optimizing health and functioning in older individuals, as supported by current and landmark research studies;
2. Describe appropriate types of physical activity for older adults;
3. Formulate a basic exercise prescription (training program) specifically for older individuals;
4. Evaluate a physical activity program for older adults;
5. Discuss possible etiologies for risk of malnutrition in elderly people;
6. Identify the essential nutrients that may be deficient in the diets of older adults;
7. Summarize basic drug use principles; and,
8. Develop strategies to maximize beneficial drug effects and avoid adverse drug events in the elderly.

Speakers
Ronni Chernoff, PhD, RD, FADA- Dr. Chernoff is the Director of the Arkansas Geriatric Education Center, Director of Education at the Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging, UAMS; and Associate Director, Education at the Geriatric Research, Education Clinical Center at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System. A professor at the DWR Department of Geriatrics, she is a past president of the American Dietetic Association.
Kellie S. Coleman, MS-Ms. Coleman is the fitness Coordinator at UAMS. She has been teaching water exercise for the past 18 years, and she has also taught Tai Chi for 1 year. Ms. Coleman trains instructors for the Arthritis Foundation in both their aquatic and PACE (People with Arthritis Can Exercise) land based exercise program.
Nicholas P. Hays, PhD- Dr. Hays is a Research Assistant, Professor in the Nutrition, Metabolism and Exercise Laboratory, Department of Geriatrics, College of Medicine, and Assistant Professor (with Graduate faculty status), Department of Dietetics and Nutrition, College of Health Related Professions University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Little Rock, AR (primary appointment). His research interest is on age-related changes in energy regulation, macronutrient metabolism nutrition, and physiology.
Beverly McCabe-Sellers, PhD, RD, LD- Dr. McCabe-Sellers is Research Coordinator/Nutritionist, Lower Mississippi Delta Nutrition Intervention Research Initiative (NIRI), United States Department of Agriculture, Agriculture Research Services. Until 2003, she was Professor of Dietetics and Nutrition, College of Health Related Professions, UAMS. Dr. McCabe-Sellers developed, planned and implemented a new Master of Science in Clinical Nutrition program.

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to sponsor continuing medical
education for physicians.This entire program has been reviewed and is acceptable for up to 4.0 hours by the American Academy of Family Physicians.
