TARGET AUDIENCE:

Physicians in primary care, internal medicine, family medicine and geriatrics, dietitians, pharmacists, nurses and other healthcare professionals interested in nutrition in older adults

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

At the completion of this conference the attendee should be able to:

1. Describe at least three alternative medicine modalities that are often used by older adults.
2. List at least three criteria for evaluating the safety and efficacy of non-traditional therapies.
3. Identify at least three new areas of exploration using nutritional supplements as interventions for commonly seen syndromes in older adults.
4. Discuss appropriate alternate interventions that may help manage chronic conditions in elderly individuals.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will address alternative therapies that may be commonly used by elderly persons to maintain health or treat chronic conditions.  Topics will address the use of herbs, vitamins, and alternative therapies that are believed to have beneficial results for the successful management of health and disease. Faculty will address how to evaluate new products and research which health professionals may encounter when providing healthcare recommendations to older clients. Potential food, drug and herbal remedy interactions will also be discussed.

ACCREDITATION:

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine and the GRECC at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System. The UAMS College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The UAMS College of Medicine Office of Continuing Medical Education designates this educational activity for a maximum of 11 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM.  Each physician should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

This educational activity is provided by the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS).  The Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by Arkansas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.  Participation in this activity provides 11 contact hours of continuing nursing education credit.

Application for CME credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians.  Determination of credit is pending. 

Application for CEU’s has also been made for dietitians, pharmacists, nursing home administrators and other disciplines.
