TARGET AUDIENCE:
The target audience includes primary care, internal medicine, family medicine, geriatricians, surgeons, geriatric specialist physicians, nurses, physical/occupational therapists, social workers, pharmacists, dietitians and other health professionals interested in issues related to hip fractures in older adults.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The goal of this program is to update practitioners with timely information on the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation management of hip fracture in older adults. At the completion of this program, the attendees should be able to:
- describe the epidemiology of hip fracture and its associated costs for care and rehabilitation;
- identify the biologic processes associated with bone fracture and healing;
- select among the surgical, pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic options for prevention and treatment of hip fracture; and
- associate rehabilitation strategies for hip fractures with desired outcomes in elderly persons.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This is a one day conference that will address timely issues in hip fracture, including prevention, treatment and rehabilitation in older adults. This will include the epidemiology of, and costs associated with, hip fracture; biological processes of healing; surgical, pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical strategies for the prevention and treatment of hip fracture; and options for rehabilitation in older adults.
ACCREDITATION:
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine and the GRECC at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System. The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
The UAMS College of Medicine Office of Continuing Medical Education designates this educational activity for a maximum of 5.25 category 1 credits towards the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those credits that he/she actually spent in the activity.
This educational activity is provided by the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS). The CAVHS is an approved provider of nursing continuing education by the Arkansas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Participation in this activity provides 6.3 contact hours of nursing continuing education credit.
