This is a one day conference that will address timely issues and advances in the management of chronic disease and non-institutional care models that have demonstrated success. As the population ages, providing care and services to elders living at home becomes an economic as well as medical imperative. The topics are timely and the speakers are expected to address the most up to date information that will be useful for all clinicians who care for older adults.
2/19/2010 Geriatric Medicine Update: Vision And Hearing Rehabilitation In Older Adult
This is a one and half day conference that will address key issues in hearing and vision rehabilitation in older adults. Topics will include a review of the aging eye and the aging auditory system; innovative approaches to rehabilitation for elders who have visual or auditory impediments; and insight into research approaches that may have an impact on vision and hearing preservation in old age.
9/23/2009 Nutrition And Aging XXIV: Nutrition, Macronutrients And Chronic Disease
This course will address the role of the major macronutrients (protein, fat and CHO) in the management of common chronic conditions in elderly persons. The topics will include an in-depth evaluation of the role of dietary protein in health and in various chronic and acute conditions; the management of diabetes in older adults as well as mechanisms for insulin resistance; issues surrounding heart disease and obesity; and the role of fiber in the maintenance of health and disease.

This course will address alternative therapies that may be commonly used by elderly persons to maintain health or treat chronic conditions. Topics will address the use of herbs, vitamins, and alternative therapies that are believed to have beneficial results for the successful management of health and disease. Faculty will address how to evaluate new products and research which health professionals may encounter when providing healthcare recommendations to older clients. Potential food, drug and herbal remedy interactions will also be discussed.

This is a one day conference that will address timely issues and advances in the management of Alzheimer’s disease. Progress on the management and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease will be addressed by experts in the field. Since Alzheimer’s disease is becoming more common as the population ages, this topic is timely and the speakers are expected to address the most up to date information that will be useful for all clinicians who care for older adults with Alzheimer’s disease.
4/2/2008 GI Motility in Older Adults
This free video teleconference (VTC) requires no participant pre-registration. Attendees to this VTC will receive 2 contact hours of CE credits. Objectives At the completion of this 2-hour video teleconference, the attendees will be able to: 1. Describe the pathophysiology and symptoms of esophageal dysmotility, 2. Evaluate these symptoms in the clinical setting, 3. Enumerate pharmacologic, endoscopic and surgical treatment of disorders of upper gastrointestinal motility, 4. Discuss multiple syndromes which constipate the clinical presentation of clinical constipation, 5. Identify the appropriate diagnostic approach to the constipated patient and 6. Review emerging treatments for refractory constipation with an emphasis on pharmacologic and behavioral treatments of the constipated patient.

This is a two-day conference that will address the many relationships, and possible etiologies, that occur in the development and management of frailty in older adults. Speakers will address the associated health problems and conditions commonly seen in elderly patients and discuss new areas that are being explored in defining, identifying, understanding and managing frailty.
5/9/2007 Best Practices in the Continuum of Care: Management of Diabetes
This is a one day conference that will address timely issues in management of diabetes in older adults. New approaches to the management of common issues faced by elderly individuals will be addressed by experts in the field. Since diabetes is one of the common causes of co-morbidities in elderly people, this topic is timely and the speakers are expected to address the most up to date information that will be useful for all clinicians who care for older adults.

3/16/2007 Geriatric Medicine Update: Falls and Gait Disorders
This is a one and a half day conference that will address key issues in the prevention of falls in older adults. Topics will include the epidemiology of falls and the burdens on the health care system, identification of fall risks including sarcopenia and nutrition, balance and gait disorders commonly seen in older adults, and the development of programs and tools that help identify and subsequently reduce the risks associated with falls.
